Haters, you might want to take Taylor Swift’s advice and “Shake It Off” after her latest burn. Lest you believe you can even think about insulting Emma Watson or feminism in her presence, Mic reports how Swift set the record straight on a TV show Sunday night.
While appearing on Tout le Monde en Parle, Swift, who came over to the feminist side of things after being convinced by pal Lena Dunham, stepped in to quickly dismiss critics who spoke out against Emma Watson’s UN speech:
“I wish when I was 12 years old, I had been able to watch a video of my favorite actress explaining in such an intellectual, beautiful poignant way the definition of feminism, because I would have understood it and then earlier on in my life I would have proudly claimed that I was a feminist.”
And that’s not all. Swift also took the opportunity to speak out against how girls are pitted against each other in the media:
“I think when it comes to females in the media, you’ll see something that kind of upsets me, which is that females are pinned up against each other, more so than men.”
So what does Swift want to see? She thinks we “have to stop being so interested in seeing girls trying to tear each other down. It has to be more about cheering each other on.”
Just like Swift was relieved to see Watson, an internationally recognized role model, speak out on such an important topic, we’re happy to see the singer do the same. And for all the haters out there, why not listen to what Mic’s Elizabeth Plank has to say:
“As an entertainer and not an academic, Taylor Swift’s vision of feminism shouldn’t have to be perfect for her to make a positive change by sharing it. At the end of the day, if we send the message that a young woman has to be flawless before she’s allowed to say anything, we’re teaching girls to fear their own voice. And isn’t that the antithesis of feminism?”
Like we said: “Shake It Off,” haters. Our Hollywood heavy-hitters are feminists, and they’re not afraid to admit it.
