Fresh after graduating high school, Tavi is doing as Tavi does: quietly, profoundly being herself. For a fashion icon and media mogul in her own right, this is big news. Now Tavi Gevinson is off to succeed in another arena: acting.

The 18-year-old recently spoke to New York Magazine about life and love, so we compiled our five favorite truth nuggets to commemorate the occasion:

1.  “I just needed to become stronger on my own, and then I was healthy and good and confident with myself.”

We love that Tavi knows how important it is to love and take care of herself. Just because she’s newly single doesn’t mean she isn’t stronger for it.

2. “I think everybody should go to high school,” she says. “It’s horrible, and it unites you with other people.”

Having just graduated, Tavi knows exactly what we went through and what – high schoolers everywhere – you’re going through now. Like she said, we can all relate to those awkward moments, early crushes, and life-affirming friendships. High school is the place where most of us experienced just that, and it is powerful to have that experience in common.

3. “Sometimes, when you’re doing a magazine interview, it’s good to remember that you are not, actually, the center of the universe. Like, at all.”

With all the success she has behind her and a Broadway debut looming, it’s refreshing to hear that Tavi is so grounded. And we mean, who doesn’t love that she took a journalist to a planetarium just to remind herself of this fact?

4. “I think that when you make yourself vulnerable, the thing that you do next is better.”

If you’ve watched Tavi make waves on her blog, her magazine, or in the fashion world, you know that the teenager is pretty much an expert on “better.” She might be young, but she’s progressing, and progress, in the fields she’s in, is always the next best thing.

5. “I hate being heartbroken, but who better to discuss it with than Taylor Swift.”

This was one of our favorite tidbits from the interview. We love that these two are friends, and we’re glad to hear that we’re not the only ones who would run to the singer-songwriter with boy problems.
